How Engine RPM Is Calculated
Engine RPM is the number of times the crankshaft of an engine rotates in one minute. RPM can be calculated at any speed given a vehicle's tire size, axle ratio, final transmission gear ratio, and transfer case gear ratio. This calculation is used to match oversize tires with new ring and pinion gears to obtain the desired engine RPM at highway speed.
Engine speed is calculated by the formula RPM Equation
where the constant π is approximately equal to 3.14159.
