Your vehicle has been road tested and has been found to have one of the following 10 conditions.
- Q. A high pitched whine at all speeds on acceleration.
A. You probably need a crown and pinion. Lack of oil? Worn bearings? Improper installation?
- Q. A high pitched whine at 80 kph on light acceleration only.
A. You got it! The crown and pinion again. Early days though, a slight noise was acceptable under this condition
(so says Henry Ford).
- Q. A high pitched whine on deceleration.
A. On deceleration, the front pinion takes the load, but the pinion nut is probably coming loose.
- Q. A growl at low speed that may change on acceleration and deceleration.
A. Usually at low speed, it’s the pinion bearings.
- Q. A clunking noise on slow turns, left and right.
A. Are all the teeth on the axle and spider gears?
- Q. A clunking noise on slow turns only when hot.
A. It’s probably a posi-trac chattering because the wrong oil was used.
- Q. A growl at all speeds may change on left and right turns.
A. The carrier bearings take the side loads in many cases; also, check front wheel bearings.
- Q. A growl at all speeds that reduces when the parking brake is applied.
A. The load is removed from the rear axle bearings while the rear drum brake is applied.
- Q. A squeaking noise on acceleration.
A. Remove the driveshaft and check the universal joints.
- Q. A growl at all speeds.
A. Put your hand on the floor between the seats and feel the driveshaft centre support bearing.
